How to Apply for a PAN Card Online, Step by Step
By Harish Chandra · 16 June 2026 · 7 min read
A PAN card is one of those documents you cannot really function without — it is needed for taxes, bank accounts, and almost any significant financial transaction. I recently got an instant e-PAN for myself in literally minutes, and a regular physical PAN for my father who wanted the card in hand. Both are easy once you know the routes, so here is the clear walkthrough.

The fastest route: instant e-PAN
If your Aadhaar is linked to an active mobile number, the quickest option is the instant e-PAN through Aadhaar-based e-KYC on the Income Tax e-filing portal. It is free, and you get a digitally valid PAN in PDF form, often within minutes.
I did mine this way. No forms, no fee, no waiting — just Aadhaar verification, an OTP, and the e-PAN was generated. For most people who just need a valid PAN number, this is more than enough.
The regular route: NSDL or UTIITSL
If you want a physical card, like my father did, you apply through the NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL PAN services portal using Form 49A for Indian citizens.
- Fill Form 49A with personal details on the portal
- Upload proof of identity, address and date of birth
- Complete Aadhaar e-KYC or submit documents as required
- Pay the processing fee and note the acknowledgement number
- Track the application and receive the card by post
Documents you may need
For the document-based route, keep these handy.
- Proof of identity (Aadhaar, Voter ID or Passport)
- Proof of address
- Proof of date of birth
- A recent passport-size photograph
Common mistakes to avoid
The biggest one is a name or date-of-birth mismatch with Aadhaar, which causes rejection or a card with wrong details. Double-check every field against your Aadhaar before submitting. Also, never apply for a second PAN if you already have one — holding two PANs is actually an offence; if you lost your card, apply for a reprint instead.
My takeaway
For most people, the instant e-PAN is the smartest first move — it is free, fast, and fully valid. Go for the physical card through NSDL or UTIITSL only if you specifically want it in hand.
Either way, do not pay an agent for something you can do in a few minutes yourself. Keep your Aadhaar details consistent, and the whole process is genuinely painless now.
