How to Apply for Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Step by Step

By Kavita Joshi · 22 May 2026 · 6 min read

When my brother had a daughter, the whole family kept saying open Sukanya, open Sukanya, but nobody actually knew the steps. So I took it on myself one Saturday, walked into the post office, and got it done. It was simpler than I feared, with one or two small hiccups. Here is exactly how it went.

Where to open it

You can open the account at most post offices and many authorised banks. We went to the post office because it was nearby and, honestly, the staff there deal with this every day. The girl child has to be below 10 years, which my niece comfortably was.

What to carry

Keep these ready so you are not running back home like I almost did.

  • The girl child's birth certificate
  • Identity and address proof of the parent or guardian
  • Passport-size photographs
  • The opening deposit amount

Filling the form and first deposit

The form is short. You fill the child's details, the guardian's details, and choose your deposit amount. You can start small and add through the year up to the annual limit. We made the first deposit, got the passbook, and that was basically it.

One thing I would tell every parent

Do not overthink the amount in year one. Just open it and start. The account runs for 21 years and the magic is in consistency, not in a big first deposit. Set a small reminder each year to top it up, and by the time she needs it for college, there is a genuinely useful corpus waiting.

Understanding the rules that matter most

The account can be opened for a girl child from birth until she turns ten years old. After ten, the window closes for new accounts. This is the one deadline that most families miss because they keep meaning to do it and then one day it is too late. If you have a daughter under ten, today is the right day to open the account.

Deposits are required for the first fifteen years. After that, the account continues to earn interest without further deposits until maturity at twenty-one years from opening. You can withdraw up to fifty percent of the balance when the girl turns eighteen for her education or marriage expenses. The full maturity amount is available when she turns twenty-one or upon her marriage, whichever is earlier.

The tax advantages are genuinely significant

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana falls in the EEE category for tax purposes: the amount deposited, the interest earned, and the maturity amount are all exempt from income tax. For a parent in a higher tax bracket, this makes SSY one of the most tax-efficient savings instruments available for the girl child's future. An investment in a random insurance product typically does not come close to matching this combination of safety, returns, and tax efficiency.

The interest rate is fixed by the government each quarter and has historically been one of the highest among small savings instruments. Even in a falling interest-rate environment, SSY rates have stayed relatively attractive compared to fixed deposits and recurring deposits.

The one mistake to avoid

Do not miss your annual deposit. The account becomes dormant if you skip a year, and reactivating it requires paying a penalty fee. Set a yearly reminder — I suggest the first week of April when the new financial year begins — to make your deposit. The minimum annual deposit is small enough that it should not be a burden, and keeping the account active ensures the compounding continues uninterrupted.

A gift that lasts longer than any physical present

I have started recommending SSY accounts as a birth gift for girl children in the family instead of toys or clothes. A contribution to the account at birth, and a small addition each year on her birthday, builds a corpus that will be genuinely useful when she needs it — for college, for starting a career, for whatever her path is. It is a more meaningful gift than anything you can wrap.

The account can be opened with a minimal amount. You do not need to commit to the maximum right away. Start with whatever is comfortable, and treat the Sukanya account as a line item in your annual plan. Small, consistent additions over twenty years compound into something genuinely significant.
