How to Link Aadhaar With Your Bank Account Online

By Neha Bhatt · 16 June 2026 · 7 min read

I only learned how important Aadhaar-bank linking was when a subsidy I was due simply did not arrive. After some digging, the reason was almost laughably simple — my Aadhaar was not seeded with that particular bank account, so the direct benefit transfer had nowhere to land. If your scheme money or LPG subsidy is stuck, this is very often the reason. Here is how to fix it.

Why linking matters so much

Almost every government benefit today flows through Direct Benefit Transfer, and DBT routes money using your Aadhaar-linked bank account. If the linkage is missing or pointing to an old account, the money you are entitled to either bounces or goes to the wrong place.

Beyond subsidies, linking also makes KYC smoother and helps with quick, paperless verification for many services. It is one of those small back-end things that quietly controls whether benefits reach you.

The ways to link it

There are several routes, and you can pick whichever is easiest for you.

  • Net banking or your bank's mobile app — usually under an Aadhaar seeding or update section
  • An ATM of your bank, which often has an Aadhaar registration option
  • An SMS service offered by some banks
  • Visiting the branch with your Aadhaar and passbook if you prefer offline

How I did it and what to check

I did mine through the bank's mobile app in about five minutes — found the Aadhaar linking option, entered my number, verified an OTP, and it was done. The confirmation came by SMS shortly after.

One important nuance: there is a difference between simply linking Aadhaar for KYC and seeding it for DBT. For benefits to flow, your Aadhaar must be the one mapped in the NPCI system to receive DBT. If a subsidy is still not arriving after linking, ask your bank specifically to confirm DBT seeding, not just KYC linking.

My takeaway

If you have multiple bank accounts, remember that your DBT money goes to the latest Aadhaar-seeded one, so be deliberate about which account you want benefits in. I had an old, barely-used account seeded, which is exactly why my subsidy went astray.

Spend five minutes confirming your Aadhaar is linked and seeded to the account you actually use. It is the quiet plumbing behind every scheme, and getting it right means your benefits simply show up without drama.
